Do you know what to do as soon as you reach home? Do you know what not to do with your kid's newly pierced ears?
One of the most common mistakes parents make is to touch their kids' piercing without washing their hands first. This exposes their child to bacteria and the risk of infection.
Conversely, another mistake is using alcohol to clean the piercing spot. However, this causes a burning sensation and slows down healing as well.
There are a range of mistakes parents can unknowingly make with their kids’ ear piercing. This is why we at Omega Pediatrics always provide comprehensive aftercare instructions for parents. These include guidelines on how to use saline solution to clean the piercing area, how to spot an infected piercing, how to choose jewelry after the waiting period, and so much more.
The symptoms of an infection include an extended period of redness and swelling, pus around the piercing area, prolonged pain, bleeding, and fever. If you suspect an infection in your kids' ear piercing, take your kid to the doctor.
Although there are some over-the-counter solutions available, these could be harmful to kids' sensitive skin. So it is recommended that you see one of our pediatricians to assess the infection and prescribe the right medication.
The guidelines provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics (APA) don’t indicate the correct age for ear piercing. However, most pediatricians recommend avoiding newborn piercings, instead waiting until the child is old enough to understand instructions on how to take care of the pierced ear.
Based on this, Omega Pediatrics finds the age range of 2-10 years old most suitable. At 2 years old, kids should have already received tetanus vaccinations and the earlobe is still soft but not too delicate. Also, kids 10 years old and under are less prone to keloids — an unsightly overgrowth of scar tissue.
All in all, ear piercings are a personal decision. If you do decide to move forward with piercing at a young age, make sure to go to a professional who can perform it hygienically and correctly.
It will be somewhat painful, but to help reduce kids’ anxiety, tell them that it will be a quick procedure that can be finished in a couple of clicks.
The first two weeks will be crucial as the piercing site can be prone to infection if not properly taken care of. As for activities, we recommend avoiding swimming because the water might contain bacteria. Also, if your child's activity requires a helmet, it’s ideal to take out the earrings beforehand for the first six months.
For earrings, we only use pure medical-grade titanium or plastic, which are both hypoallergenic. Our piercing gun is from the Blomdahl System, which includes a surgical marking pen and sterile, disposable products such as medical plastic earring cassette and antiseptic wipes.
Nickel and cobalt are common allergens so we recommend avoiding earrings that contain these metals. Surgical metals are best, such as stainless steel, titanium, platinum, or 14K gold. For kids, lightweight post-type earrings with a soft fastener at the back are best. Dangling earrings and those that have large and sharp projections at the back are not recommended.
Omega Pediatrics has a wide range of medical-grade titanium and plastic earrings that come in different colors and designs. They’re lightweight and fun to wear!
